Aims: to provide support and advice, as well as learning, sporting and social activities and opportunities to develop skills and self-confidence, to young people.
Activities: car maintenance training; youth clubs; workshops; counselling; gardening; cooking; street teams.
Finances: 2014-2015 income of about £195,000, with staff costs of £120,000 (and five employees).
Light Project Pro International
Start year: 2004.
Base premises: in Orkney House on Caledonian Road.
Catchment area: north London (but mainly local).
Aims: to provide educational opportunities for both children and adults, especially for marginalised people such as immigrants.
Activities: courses typically in Arabic, various European languages and information technology for beginners; assisted study groups such as homework classes.
Finances: 2013-2014 income of about £35,000, with staff costs of £10,000 (and one employee).
Sparkplug Motorcycle Project
Start year: 2006.
Base premises: alongside Bingfield Park on Pembroke Street.
Catchment area: north London (but mainly local).
Aims: to increase employability and self-esteem among young people.
Activities: motor cycle and pedal cycle maintenance training, partly in association with Prospex; trips.
Finances: 2013-2014 income of about £120,000, with staff costs of £70,000 (and four employees).
Islington Play Association
Start year: 1971.
Base premises: in West Library on Bridgeman Road (and operating Crumbles Castle alongside Bingfield Park on Pembroke Street and Lumpy Hill on Market Road, as well as other playgrounds).
Catchment area: Islington.
Aims: to increase, improve, protect and operate opportunities for creative and challenging play.
Activities: adventure playgrounds; children’s centres; cooking; campaigning.
Finances: 2013-2014 income of about £1,485,000, with staff costs of £1,100,000 (and eighty employees).
Help on your doorstep
Start year: 2009.
Base premises: in Elliott Place.
Catchment area: Islington.
Aims: to prevent and relieve poverty by connecting residents suffering from social or economic deprivation with relevant local services.
Activities: outreach; referral; community work development; welfare grant management; counselling.
Finances: 2013-2014 income of about £500,000, with staff costs of £375,000 (and eleven employees).
Shelter from the Storm
Start year: 2007.
Base premises: in Blundell Street (but expecting to move in 2018, because of redevelopment of the site).
Catchment area: north London.
Aims: to provide shelter, food, support and advice to people who are homeless or otherwise socially or economically disadvantaged.
Activities: beds; meals; help with permanent accommodation and employment; legal guidance; counselling.
Finances: 2014-2015 income of about £220,000, with staff costs of £60,000 (and two employees).
Choices Islington
Start year: 2008.
Base premises: near Caledonian Road and Barnsbury Station on Caledonian Road.
Catchment area: north London.
Aims: to provide support and advice to people who have unplanned pregnancies or emotional difficulties after abortions.
Activities: counselling; courses on relationships for young people, through other agencies.
